A half hour later, we resumed the conversation and (typically of Coach Rogers; he had set me up) he then finished the story and told me how hard you guys played! You are a special group, you work the team aspect so much better that any previous group. I really believe that you are all about winning and not about who does what. I have seen that in the games at home when the guys on the bench are as involved as the guys who are playing. Collaborative: Jason Stephansky

This chapter is about working together as a team to make the team
better. Each individual on the team brings something different to
their team. However in order for the true skills of the individual on
a team to be applied, teammates must work together and complete, not
compete with their teammates. The team must come first, and players
must cooperate with eachother. By sharing their knowledge and skill
with other players, they help to make the team better. If each team
member works to complete their teammates, tasks thought impossible as
an individual are possible as a team.

Jason Vancura is a teammate that demonstrates this quality. I always
see Jason helping out other post players and teammates, making them
better. By helping them individually, he is making the team better.

Josh Hansen is another teammate that demonstrates this quality. He is
always helping teammates out with where to go on plays and offenses.
His direction helps the team play more affectively.

Adaptable by Shane Gray

Being adaptable does not simply entail being easily changed; you must
be willing to: 1) change for the beterment of the team and 2) change
in a way that's creative and efficient. Becoming adaptable can be
broken down into four key "sub-qualities". The first is teachability.
You must be willing to learn new material no matter how grueling the
task may seem or feel initially; as long as the learning puts you in a
position to adapt successfully, it's well worth the temporary pain.
The second "sub-quality" is emotional security. People who are
emotionally secure do not get all worked up when change occurs.
Instead, they remain calm, embrace the change, and look at what they
can do to make the best out of the situation in regards to the team.
Next is creativity. Similarly to what I said in my quote by Phil
Jackson about how unpredictable the game of basketball can be,
creative problem solving is vital to being adaptable. When an
unprecedented or unfamiliar obstacle confronts our team, look for a
solution to the change in an unorthodox manner; do not be afraid of
trying something that is outside your comfort zone. Being service
minded is the final key to becoming adaptable. Your goals and values
should be placed with the team in mind first; be unselfish.

Players Who Demonstrate Adaptablitity
1) Josh Burnett- When our team was in need of a point guard, Josh (who
has played mainly the 2 and 3 in career) did not hesitate to step up
and fill the role. He has been teachable in doing so and has taken
extra strides to ensure he fully understands the position and what it
entails. He is service minded because the point guard may not score
many points, but to say this position is extremely VITAL to the team
is an understatement. So far in his transition, he has been challenged
to facilitate our offense (along with Hansen) and has lead us to a
solid start to the season with 2 wins vs. formidable teams. He has
also played stingy defense against 2 of the most premier guards in our
league (Beldo and Grossman).

2) Eric "Birdman" Johnson- Although last year was his first season in
the program, he made unprecented strides during the season and
eventually logged key minutes in important end-of-the-season games. He
has been challenge with adding an offensive spark to our team after
having no role with the team for his first two years.

Enthusiastic by John Hardiman: Enthusiasm is one key to success. It is
about having a positive attitude and it cannot be substituted. In
other words, there's no alternative to enthusiasm. If you have a
passion for something, it is important to take responsibility for your
own enthusiasm. Attitude is a choice - thus enthusiasm is as well. If
you wait for others to spark your enthusiasm, success is completely
out of your hands. However, those who believe in what they do and
display their enthusiasm can greatly impact the success of our team.
It is essential, in order to achieve that success, to display and
spread your enthusiasm.

Two teammates who exemplify enthusiasm...

TJ - TJ and I were sitting on the bench when someone on the floor hit
a three. I remember the excitement TJ displayed and how he encouraged
that player to keep shooting. Being one of our best shooters, TJ
showed his enthusiasm because he didn't care who was taking the shots.
He was just excited for that player, and his enthusiasm in turn rubbed
off on me.

Josh B. - Even with the little things, Josh shows enthusiasm. He has
little comments here and there that often go unnoticed - except for by
me. His enthusiasm is clear wether he is on or off the floor as he
encourages and cheers on the rest of us.

Three’s company for boys basketball

The North Quincy Red Raiders have one of the best interior players in the Patriot League, so T.J. Champignie and Eric Johnson beat them from behind the arc. The senior duo combined for nine three pointers and 43 points to lead the boys basketball to a 66-63 win at North Quincy on Friday. “[They] put on a shooting clinic from behind the arc,” head coach Bob Rodgers said. “North Quincy is always a tough place to play. Our guys showed a great deal of composure in this game to pull it out.” Champignie led the team with 23 points, and hit four free throws in the last 1:30 of the fourth quarter to keep the Panthers ahead. Johnson provided an early spark off the bench for the Panthers, scoring 11 straight points in the first half to prevent North Quincy from running away with the game early. “Eric is a great story,” Rodgers said. “He didn’t make the team as a freshman or sophomore, but kept working on it and refused to give up. Now he has emerged as not only one of our best players, but also one of the best players in our league. It looked like we were letting it slip away falling behind by double digits, but then he ripped off those 11 straight points and we had some momentum.” The solid outside shooting took some off the pressure of the Panther big men, who had their hands full with Red Raider center Mike Stanton. “North Quincy provided quite a challenge for us with their inside play,” Rodgers said. “Jason Vancura and John Hardiman did a good job with the toughest post player in our league. We hope that the experience will make them better moving forward.” The Raiders took the momentum early, but Johnson’s 11 straight points brought Whitman-Hanson back and prevented an early blowout. After the Panthers got back into the game, the teams swapped leads until the final minutes of the third quarter, when Tim Farrell’s two foul shots gave Whitman-Hanson a 55-53 lead. The Panthers clung to the lead for the rest of the game by sinking clutch shots and only missing two free throws. “We hit some key free throws down the stretch,” Rodgers said. “Some guys hit some pressure shots when we needed it the most.” The Panthers also got a good game out of point guard Josh Hansen. Hansen took over the point this year after Ryan Benton and James Hunter split the duty last year and scored five points with seven assists and only turned the ball over once. “He is doing a great job playing within himself and not trying to do too much. He seems to get better every day.” Rodgers said. The Panthers play their final game before the holiday break on Dec. 23 against Duxbury. After their annual trip to Key West, Fla., they will return to league play on Jan. 5 at Hingham.
